Our Philosophy

Our classes are designed to reflect our philosophy that, in addition to requiring hard work, learning has to be enjoyable. We build a fun, comfortable environment where a friendly relationship exists between students and their peers and instructors to ensure students feel capable of doing their best. We do not just teach our students; we also mentor them. In order for the students to work diligently without complaint, we create a culture in which hard work is a daily routine. When students blend themselves into the culture, they are influenced by their environment to excel and therefore obtain pleasure, and results, from their efforts.

We divide our learning space into small classrooms so class sizes are manageable: all our students sit in the first row and receive the individual attention they require and deserve.

Max Cheng
  • M.A. in Biotechnology, Johns Hopkins University

Hi! My name is Max and I am an experienced tutor and an educational program manager/creator who has been teaching grades 6-12 for a little over 5 years now. I have tutored hundreds of students and helped them get “A’s” in their classes and 5’s on their APs. With a MA in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins and a BS in Neurobiology/Psychology Degree from UC Davis, I am a scientist at heart and I wish to impart the skills and lessons I have learned to the next generation. While I specialize in biology and psychology at the high school level, I have experience teaching a variety of different subjects including Math, Chemistry, English, and even Test Prep.

My teaching philosophy is simple. If students enjoy what they are learning, the more I enjoy teaching them and I will challenge them to do better. In biology, this is called a positive feedback loop, where if I teach the students to be better learners, the students can make me a better teacher for them. That’s why I love creating interactive activities and games to aid with subject understanding. I take the rote concepts in textbooks and make them easily digestible for those who are looking to improve or those who want to refine their skills.

    Yunus Syed
    • Goergia Institute of Technnology (MS in Computer Science)

Hi! My name is Yunus and I have extensive experience tutoring all levels of math and coaching various math competitions. Starting from a young age, I had an interest in mathematics and spent much of my time either doing coursework or working through math competition problems. By the time I finished middle school, I had already completed the high school math curriculum and began studying calculus. By the end of high school, I completed the calculus series, linear algebra and real analysis. During my undergraduate studies, I took numerous courses at the undergraduate and graduate level and specialized in the intersection of algebraic geometry and algebraic topology. During the pandemic, I left my mathematics PhD to work for Waymo here in the bay area. There, I developed an interest in AI and transitioned into pursuing a masters in AI at Georgia Institute of Technology.

My math competition achievements include winning at the regional and state level of mathcounts, perfect score on the AMC 8, distinguished scorer for the AMC 10/12, four-time AIME participant, Chicago ARML team member and top 500 Putnam.

    Nikki Bostwick
    • University of Toronto - Bachelor’s Degree
    • Rotterdam Conservatory - Graduate Studies
    • Oxford University - Master’s Degree
    • Stanford University - Ph.D.

Nikki teaches English Language Arts (with emphasis on essay writing) and College Planning.

Having attended post-secondary institutions in four countries, Nikki is able to advise students on how to prepare for college (in the US and abroad) and help students navigate the college application process.

Over decades of pedagogical endeavours, Nikki has developed a thoughtful, individualized approach to teaching. In her Language Arts classes, students learn to critique essays in order to appreciate the confluence of two crucial elements of effective writing: organization of material/ideas in a logical manner, combined with sentence-level clarity. Nikki has created a methodology that is effective in teaching students to plan effectively, write eloquently, and edit objectively.

Since each student has unique gifts and challenges, a one-size-fits-all method can never be as effective as an individualized approach. By giving students tools and showing them steps they can follow to identify and address issues they find personally challenging, significant improvement often can be seen in a relatively short time. Nikki is proactive in identifying areas of difficulty and showing students the most efficient strategies that will help them fulfil their potential.
